ENDLESS CORONET

ENDLESS CORONET is a generative web artwork by Bryan Boyd. Visitors fire a strobe at a falling droplet; the instant of the trigger, together with a single control running from OBSERVED to IMAGINED, determines a synthetic high-speed photography experiment, and an image model produces the exposure. Every exposure is numbered, dated, and entered permanently into a public archive. The work inverts Harold Edgerton’s stroboscopic milk-drop photographs of the 1930s: where Edgerton’s flash revealed instants too fast to see, this apparatus photographs instants that never occurred.

Herbert E. Grier, who co-invented the miniature stroboscope with Edgerton and Kenneth Germeshausen in 1934 and later co-founded EG&G, was the artist’s great-uncle.
